Quebec man acquitted in police officer slaying

Basil Parasiris was acquitted on Friday by a 12-person jury at the Longueuil courthouse, on Montreal's South Shore.

He was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Const. Daniel Tessier, who died after being shot three times last spring after he entered Parasiris's Brossard home with a battering ram during a botched drug raid.

The verdict means the jury believed Parasiris's self-defence argument was enough to raise a reasonable doubt about the charges.

I agree with this. If the police kick down the wrong door, the occupants should have the right to repel using lethal force. From their point of view it is a home invasion by armed men.

Plastic shower curtains may pose health hazard

OTTAWA - A new study says some plastic shower curtains may be hazardous to your health.

The U.S.-based Centre for Health, Environment and Justice says polyvinyl chloride (PVC) shower curtains may release 108 toxic chemicals into the air.

The study found the ubiquitous PVC curtains contain harmful chemicals that can cause a litany of adverse health effects to the lungs, central nervous system, liver and kidneys.

The study examined shower curtains purchased in the U.S. from Bed Bath and Beyond, Kmart, Sears, Target and Wal-Mart stores - but most major Canadian retailers carry some variety of vinyl shower curtain.

The Whitehall ban has been immediately condemned as a "totalitarian act" by the playwright Harold Pinter, while Stop the War organisers are urging people to defy it and to demonstrate nearby in Parliament Square.

Get Osama Bin Laden before I leave office, orders George W Bush

The Special Boat Service (SBS) and the Special Reconnaissance Regiment have been taking part in the US-led operations to capture Bin Laden in the wild frontier region of northern Pakistan. It is the first time they have operated across the Afghan border on a regular basis.

Obviously, Bush has legacy on the brain syndrome, to be pulling this kind of stunt.

And I honestly don't know whether to laugh or cry, reading this.

Ben Laden "assumed room temperature" some years ago, and both the US and British intelligence agencies know this full well.

So what do you think they're going to do, find someone who looks like Bin Laden to arrest, throw in jail, and ultimately assassinate just so that some people might actually think they really caught the guy?

If Washington and London politicians really think this song and dance will be believed by the thinking public, they are absolutely, completely wrong!

I freed millions from barbarism, says President with no regrets

Asked what he thinks his legacy might be, he says he is happy to await the verdict of history. But he cannot resist also offering his own, suggesting 'the liberation of 50 million people from the clutches of barbaric regimes is noteworthy, at a minimum'.

To make a statement like this, one has to wonder if Bush is off his medication, taking way too much, or has just decided that somehow continuing to lie to the American people and the world just might serve to make the lie true.;

His "legacy" will be the deaths of over one million Iraqis, and thousands of Afghanis.

Many others in both countries have had to flee for fear of their lives due to sectarian strife.

Practically everything in both Iraq and Afghanistan is broken, the water and sewage systems, the hospitals, and the schools.

Women have had to revert to wearing the full burka, because if they don't they will be assassinated by religious zealots.

The no-bid alleged "reconstruction projects" have been an absolutely horrendous joke in terms shoddy workmanship that crumbles if you sneeze too hard at a wall.

And of course, the real "gift that has kept on giving", both in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been the use of depleted uranium weapons.

This has caused death and huge numbers of birth defects not only in the people of these countries, but also with our troops and their children.

No matter how he may try to spin it, Bush's "legacy" will be that of a complete absence of moral accountability for the death and destruction his policies have wrought.

The Bush administration's Iraq policy suffered two major setbacks Friday when Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki publicly rejected key U.S. terms for an ongoing military presence and anti-American Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr called for a new militia offensive against U.S.

You have to wonder if this administration thought that Iraqis were just going to roll over and play dead on this massive national insult (much as the 110th congress has during its tenure in Washington).

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that foreign terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay have rights under the Constitution to challenge their detention in U.S. civilian courts.

Outgoing US commander blames Pakistan for spike in Afghan attacks

Attacks increased by 50 percent in April in Afghanistan's eastern region, as a spreading Taliban insurgency in Pakistan fuelled a surge in violence, the outgoing US commander of NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan has claimed.

At a Pentagon news conference, Gen Dan K McNeill, who left Afghanistan on June 3 after 16 months of command in the country, said that stabilising Afghanistan would be impossible without a more robust military campaign against insurgents in Pakistan.

Pakistan condemns "cowardly" U.S. attack; 11 dead

Pakistan said on Wednesday an "unprovoked and cowardly" air strike by U.S. forces had killed 11 Pakistani soldiers on its border with Afghanistan and undermined the basis of security cooperation.

The U.S. military said in a statement issued on Wednesday that it had coordinated the artillery and air strike with Pakistan, but was investigating further.

If the US was actually "coordinating" the artillery and airstrike with Pakistan, how did they wind up with 11 dead Pakistani soldiers?!?

All of a sudden, in online articles, we are seeing a real demonization of the current Pakistani regime.

One has to wonder if these articles have been placed to "soften up" the American people toward some kind of military strike on Pakistan.

And remember; just to Pakistan's western border lies....Iran.

The incident in Makeen comes just days after an airstrike by US-led coalition forces that had killed 11 Pakistani troops. US officials have said the coalition was legitimately targeting militants but has offered to conduct a joint investigation with Pakistan

Apparently for the US, there is no such thing as "sovereignty" when it comes to Pakistani airspace.

Of course, what these attacks will do is to weaken an already shaky truce between the Pakistani government and its own militants in this region.

Perhaps this precisely the US's intent here.

Whatever Happened to "Democracy Now?"

This is the second time in a week where Goodman's editorial judgment has left me deeply disappointed. First was the refusal to cover -- yet again -- the AIPAC conference, with all its implications for US politics and the Middle East. In a year when even the mainstream media was finally forced to take notice (with Jon Stewart of the Daily Show going so far as to refer to the lobby group as the 'Elders of Zion', Democracy Now appeared alone in missing the irony of three presidential candidates pledging to fight the domination of lobbyists in Washington genuflect to the most powerful of them all.

Amy, what happened to Democracy Now's promise to speak truth to power? Did you not say once that your aim was to go where the silence is? How is it that the Washington Post was able to break the silence even as Democracy Now remained AWOL? Why did Democracy Now join MSM in denying Mearsheimer and Walt a voice, instead allowing their views to be misrepresented by critics without a chance of rebuttal? How well placed are you to criticize the mainstream for refusing to stand up to power when you can yourself be considered guilty of the same?

Bush attacks Iran over rejection of nuclear offer

Before Mr Bush spoke, an Iranian Government spokesman, Gholamhossein Elham, made it clear in Tehran that stopping enrichment was unacceptable.

"If the package includes suspension, it is not debatable at all," Mr Elham said.

Translation: what the US and the EU have done here is present a proposal they absolutely knew from the get-go was going to be an non-starter, because of the provision requiring Iran to suspend enrichment.

So, now the stage is absolute set for "Oh well, we tried diplomacy but that didn't work, so.... it's off with the bombs and rockets!".

Of course, such a move would be colossally insane; and the consequences of such a move would crush some very tender parts of the US's and the world's economy in a vise called "oil supply disruption".

Unfortunately, just because it is insane does not mean that Bush & Co will not do it.

Smugglers Had Design For Advanced Warhead

The drawings, discovered in 2006 on computers owned by Swiss businessmen, included essential details for building a compact nuclear device that could be fitted on a type of ballistic missile used by Iran and more than a dozen developing countries, the report states.

I smell a rat here. Note how Iran gets more mention than anyone else in this story.

The NIE released earlier this year reported the unanimous conclusions of all 16 US Intelligence Agencies that Iran has not been working on nuclear weapons since at least 2003, and nobody is really sure whether they were doing so prior to that. This makes a false-flag nuclear attack on the US to kick off a new war a problem unless a plausible case can be made for Iran skipping all the R&D and going straight from uranium centrifuge to working weapon. This story appears to be an effort to create such a case.

Iran has blueprints and technology to make nuclear warheads that could fit could fit onto Shehab-3 missiles, a former U.N. weapons inspector claims.

The rat I was smelling yesterday just farted!

Yesterday we saw that first story about the smuggling ring having blueprints and plans for nuclear weapons, and I pointed out that Iran got the most play in the list of nations that "might" have received this information.

So, here is what seems to be coming down.

1. All 16 US Intelligence agencies (and most foreign nations except Israel) have confirmed that Iran is not developing nuclear weapons and has not been doing so going back at least to 2003.

2. This makes it very difficult to set off a false-flag nuclear explosion in the US to kick off war with Iran because Iran is not doing the extensive R&D needed to explain how they got a bomb.

3. Therefore, as part of a run-up to a false-flag, "someone" has to make the case that Iran has somehow found a way to skip the R&D needed to make a bomb and is able to build a bomb overnight to use on the US.

Former inspector: Advanced nuke plans might have gone to Iran

Right on the cover of TIME magazine. That makes it official. The game plan is to come up with a reason to attack Iran even though there is no proof whatsoever that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.

The story now appears to be that Ahmadinajad got into a fight and had a tooth knocked out, put it under his pillow last night, and the @#%ing tooth fairy put some nuclear warhead plans under there for him to find in the morning!

They better really crank up the meprobamate in the water supply if they expect Americans to sit still for this one!

Nuclear ring reportedly had advanced design

American and international investigators say that they have found the electronic blueprints for an advanced nuclear weapon on computers that belonged to the nuclear smuggling network run by Abdul Qadeer Khan, the rogue Pakistani nuclear scientist, but that they have not been able to determine whether they were sold to Iran or the smuggling ring's other customers.

Notice the clustering and timing of these stories, even though the "journalists" writing them have absolutely zero proof that Iran ever got any of these plans.

This is no accident, and the timing is very interesting, with Bush just finishing his little European junket on US taxpayers' dollars.

Jeepers! Has Everybody Forgotten This Story?

Hello!?!? Has everybody forgotten that Bush has already given the secrets of building an atomic bomb not only to Iran, but to every evil empire in the world? I remember when this story first broke. It's lifespan in the news cycle lasted from Friday afternoon to a Saturday morning. Supposedly the story was dropped because it was "unfair" and "too partisan" to run it because of the upcoming election.

A little over a year ago Bush put up a website that contained information that was captured in Iraq. Amongst this treasure trove the administration accidently overlooked part of the information that contained all of the secrets needed to build an atomic bomb. The website was called "Operation Iraqi Freedom Document Portal", which is of course no longer online. The damage is already done, however. Every intelligence agency in the world is constantly watching the White House website like a hawk. There can be no doubt that the nuclear secrets are now practically in the public domain.

FLASHBACK: Iran, Nukes, and the 'Laptop of Death'

It all goes back to what is called "the laptop of death" - a portable computer obtained in mid-2004 from a "walk-in" source, who had supposedly received it from another unidentified person in Iran, which contained "voluminous" plans for the construction of a missile containing a nuclear warhead. U.S. officials used this "find" to convince the Europeans that the Iranian nuclear threat is real and menacing: it was a key part of the rationale for the alarming 2005 NIE. Yet the story of where this treasure trove of intelligence allegedly came from kept getting murkier and more dubious. According to Dafna Linzer, reporting in the Washington Post, it was "allegedly stolen from an Iranian whom German intelligence tried, unsuccessfully, to recruit as an informant. It was whisked out of the country by another Iranian who offered it up to foreign intelligence officials in Turkey as evidence of a nuclear weapons program."

If this sounds like the Niger uranium papers, the crude forgeries that somehow got past the president's Praetorian Guard and formed the basis for the infamous "sixteen words," then the question asked by Podhoretz and his pals - how did we get it so wrong? - takes on a meaning they never intended. Because, if we look at the timeline of this evolving narrative, the discrepancy between the discovery of the "laptop of death" in mid-2004 and the termination of the Iranian nukes program in 2003 raises a simple question: Was "the laptop of death" a deliberate effort to deceive?

The laptop was ultimately exposed as a Mossad plant.

Iran Nuke Laptop Data May Have Come From Mossad

The George W. Bush administration has long pushed the "laptop documents" -- 1,000 pages of technical documents supposedly from a stolen Iranian laptop -- as hard evidence of Iranian intentions to build a nuclear weapon. Now charges based on those documents pose the only remaining obstacles to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) declaring that Iran has resolved all unanswered questions about its nuclear programme.

But those documents have long been regarded with great suspicion by U.S. and foreign analysts. German officials have identified the source of the laptop documents in November 2004 as the Mujahideen e Khalq (MEK), which along with its political arm, the National Council of Resistance in Iran (NCRI), is listed by the U.S. State Department as a terrorist organisation.

There are some indications, moreover, that the MEK obtained the documents not from an Iranian source but from Israel's Mossad.

Nonetheless, doubts about the intelligence persist among some foreign analysts. In part, that is because American officials, citing the need to protect their source, have largely refused to provide details of the origins of the laptop computer beyond saying that they obtained it in mid-2004 from a longtime contact in Iran.

The laptop was ultimately exposed as a Mossad plant.

U.S. Consulate employee dies of heart attack at Israeli checkpoint

Mohammed Mousa, 63, who has worked for forty years at the US Consulate in Jerusalem and is an American citizen, died of a heart attack when Israeli soldiers refused to allow him to pass through the checkpoint to work this week.

The incident took place on Tuesday, and the IMEMC has confirmed that the heart attack was directly correlated to the stress of being held at the checkpoint.

Israeli soldiers stationed at checkpoints in the Jerusalem area regularly deny entry to Palestinians holding foreign citizenship and holding all necessary permits to pass. There is more than twice as much oil in the ground as major producers say, according to a former industry adviser who claims there is widespread misunderstanding of the way proven reserves are calculated.

Although it is widely assumed that the world has reached a point where oil production has peaked and proven reserves have sunk to roughly half of original amounts, this idea is based on flawed thinking, said Richard Pike, a former oil industry man who is now chief executive of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Current estimates suggest there are 1,200 billion barrels of proven global reserves, but the industry's internal figures suggest this amounts to less than half of what actually exists.

The misconception has helped boost oil prices to an all-time high, sending jitters through the market and prompting calls for oil-producing nations to increase supply to push down costs.

Flying into Japan for a summit two days after prices reached a record $139 a barrel, energy ministers from the G8 countries yesterday discussed an action plan to ease the crisis.
