U.S. scientists discover genetic switch to "turn off" HIV

U.S. researchers have discovered the genetic circuit in HIV that controls whether the virus turns active or stays dormant, and have succeeded in forcing the virus toward dormancy.

Grain Prices Soar Globally Leading To Food Riots

Bangkok, Thailand - - Rice farmers here are staying awake in shifts at night to guard their fields from thieves. In Peru, shortages of wheat flour are prompting the military to make bread with potato flour, a native crop. In Egypt, Cameroon, and Burkina Faso food riots have broken out in the past week.

Around the world, governments and aid groups are grappling with the escalating cost of basic grains. In December, 37 countries faced a food crisis, reports the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), and 20 nations had imposed some form of food-price controls.

Air passengers face toxic risk: group

LONDON (AFP) - Thousands of air passengers and flight crews are being put at risk of permanent brain damage from toxic fumes leaking into aircraft cabins, a pressure group warned Thursday.

The Global Cabin Air Quality Executive (GCAQE) said there is evidence that numerous chemicals from engine oils and lubricants get into cabin air supplies every day through air-conditioning systems.

Gulf War syndrome firmly linked to chemical exposure

Nearly two decades after veterans of the 1991 Gulf War came home complaining of odd illnesses, enough evidence has been gathered to determine that many of them were sickened by chemical exposure, a study published Monday concluded.

The vets who are still suffering from these illnesses should be treated by the VA right the heck now!

When it comes to health care after service, every single veteran should be getting the kind of health care that Bush and Cheney get, period, end of discussion.

These people are not expendable after their tour of duty: they deserve to be treated as well as possible.

Brazilian berry destroys cancer cells in lab

Western diet boosts colon cancer risk by 300 per cent

The dietary habits of the cancer patients fell into two basic patterns: The "Western" diet was characterized by the consumption of large amounts of red and processed meats, refined grains and sugars; the "prudent" diet was characterized by consumption of large amounts of fruits, vegetables and relatively higher amounts of poultry and fish relative to red meat.

CDC Suppressed Toxic Trailer Warnings

CBS News has learned that the Centers for Disease Control, the nation's top public health agency, suppressed repeated warnings from one of its top scientists, raising questions about whether the CDC bowed to pressure from FEMA to conceal the long-term health risks of formaldehyde in the trailers it distributed to hurricane victims - health risks like cancer and birth defects, CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian reports.

Reversal Of Alzheimer's Symptoms Within Minutes In Human Study

An extraordinary new scientific study, which for the first time documents marked improvement in Alzheimer’s disease within minutes of administration of a therapeutic molecule, has just been published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation.

If these results can be expanded upon in further tests, it will mark a true milestone in the treatment of Alzheimer's patients.

Scientist who claimed GM crops could solve Third World hunger admits he got it wrong

A claim that GM technology is helping deliver higher crop yields in Africa was wrong, the Government's chief scientist has been forced to admit.

Professor Sir David King recently caused uproar with his assertion that GM crops could help feed the hungry of the Third World.

He called on the Government to campaign for the adoption of GM technology and said the Daily Mail's campaigning stance against it was holding up progress.

Yesterday however he was accused of "letting off blasts of hot and sometimes rancid air" after it emerged his latest GM crop claims were wildly innaccurate.

Now, about the claim that GM crops had nothing to do with the bee die-off...

MEDICAID KIDS IN PSYCH-RX $URGE

Risperdal was given to 17,393 New York Medicaid kids in 2006, making it the most heavily prescribed psychiatric drug in the program. It was recently approved by the FDA to treat autism but is also often prescribed for bipolar disorder in kids. It's blamed in lawsuits nationwide for side effects including diabetes caused by weight gain, Parkinson's-like movement disorders and gynecomastia, in which males grow breasts.

Study "Disproving" Mercury-Autism Link Published in Journal with Financial Ties to Vaccine Manufacturers

While the mainstream press is widely reporting a new study "disproving" any link between autism and mercury-containing thimerosal in vaccines, no one has bothered to point out that the study was published in a medical journal stacked full of ads from the very same drug companies that manufacture and market vaccines.

Outcomes of many so-called "scientific" studies are driven by what the funding insititutions want to see happen.

This isn't science: it's deception, pure and simple.

Is plastic making us fat?

Animal studies in recent years raise the possibility that prenatal exposure to minuscule amounts of common chemicals - found in everything from baby bottles to toys - could predispose a body to a life of weight gain. The chemicals, known as endocrine disrupters, mimic natural hormones that help regulate, for example, how many fat cells a body makes and how much fat to store in them.

There are some other causes for the obesity epidemic; causes the mainstream media won't touch because their advertisers would object.

When you get a chance, rent a DVD of the movie, "The Insider". Starring Russell Crowe, this film is based on the true story of a tobacco company insider who blew the whistle on the tobacco companies' addition of chemicals to cigarettes to make them more addictive.

Likewise, US food manufacturers add chemicals to processed food to make people want to eat MORE, in order to sell more product and make more money. Two of the worst are Aspartame and Monosodium Glutamate.

Aspartame is sold as a diet aid and artificial sweetener. But along with its other delitorious health effects, asprtame causes the body to crave carbohydrates! This is why food stores will bundle bottles of aspartame-laced diet sodas with various corn and potato chip products. They know that as you drink the diet soda, you will consume the snack chips.

Monosodium glutamate, or MSG, is marketed as a flavor enhancer, but what it really does is block the neurotransmitters that signal the brain when one has eaten enough. When laboratories need obese rats for medical tests, they will dose the rats with monosodium glutamate. Otherwise the rats would stop eating and refuse to put on weight. Monosodium glutamate is prescribed for elderly patients who are not eating enough.

When you eat food made with monosodium glutamate, you will eat much more than usual, which means you will go back to the store more often to buy more food, driving up the food manufacturer's profits. Which is fine for them and their shareholders, but you are still eating more than you normally would because of the chemicals added by the food companies, just as cigarette smokers smoked more cigarettes than they normally would have because of the chemicals added by the tobacco companies.

So powerful is monosodium glutamate in making people consume more food that food manufacturers add it to all sorts of products, often concealing it by using alternative names such as "hydrolyzed Wheat Protein", or even vague descriptions such as "enzymes" and "natural flavorings." In one ironic case, a low-fat yogurt product specifically targeted at people trying to lose weight was found to be loaded with MSG, which would make the dieter eat MORE of the product. The label did not list MSG specifically, but used the phrase "Enzymes".

What we need is a new "Insider" who will blow the lid off of the chemicals added to food by food manufacturers for no other purpose than to sell more product, without regard for the health damages that chemically induced overeating can cause.
