Cornell ecologist's study finds that producing ethanol and biodiesel from corn and other crops is not worth the energy
Turning plants such as corn, soybeans and sunflowers into fuel uses much more energy than the resulting ethanol or biodiesel generates, according to a new Cornell University and University of California-Berkeley study.
This is an excellent example of how the Global Warming cult races headlong into advocating actions without fully understanding the implications of what it is they are talking about. All these plant conversion techniques being "sold" by the cult actually use up MORE fossil fuel than the final product replaces, i.e. every ten gallons of ethanol produced takes 13 gallons of fossil fuel to manufacture.

Bush's Petro-Cartel Almost Has Iraq's Oil
Even as Iraq verges on splintering into a sectarian civil war, four big oil companies are on the verge of locking up its massive, profitable reserves, known to everyone in the petroleum industry as "the prize."
Scramble for Iraq's oil begins as troops start to pull outt
Even while the security situation in Iraq remains dire, it seems the prize will be just too great for the oil majors to resist. The country has proven reserves of 115 billion barrels of oil, around the same as Iran, but it is thought that its actual reserves could be anywhere up to 300 billion barrels - which would make it bigger than Saudi Arabia. Much of the west of Iraq remains unexplored.
It's crystal clear that American kids have fought, gotten maimed, and died....so that major oil companies could get their share of Iraqi oil.
Iraq: Bush has a plan, and it's working
So, as this article points out, even though this 'plan' is sick, twisted, and demonstrates utter contempt to the human cost, Bush supporters (read: those folks with the money to acquire "assets" in high office) must think things are going brilliantly.
And for certain oil and defense segments of the economy, that's entirely correct.
Asia Times Online columnist Spengler has pointed out that chaos is probably the best option for the Bush administration, not only in Iraq but in the region (see How I learned to stop worrying and love chaos, March 14, 2006, and Mistah Kurtz, he clueless, May 11, 2004). And a strategy of fomenting chaos makes perfect sense in a twisted sort of way: a stable, autonomous Iraq means oil will be pumped, bringing down international crude prices, and that's the last thing the Bush administration's backers want.
Who are the administration's backers, and who has a hotline to the presidency, via Vice President Dick Cheney? Big Oil. Consider these well-known facts:
Cheney was formerly chief executive officer of oil-services company Halliburton, which, incidentally, was found by a 2003 Pentagon audit to have overcharged the US government by US$61 million for delivering gasoline to Iraq.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice sat on Chevron's board of directors from 1991 to 2001, and Chevron named an oil tanker after her.
James A Baker III, secretary of state for Bush's father and now "fixer" for the Bush family, has been appointed co-chair of the Iraq Study Group, charged with advising Bush Jr on future Iraq policy. His law firm, Baker Botts, was ranked by Who's Who Legal last year as "Global Oil and Gas Law Firm of the Year". His clients include the royal family of Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries kingpin Saudi Arabia.
Bush himself was a Texas oilman, though not a very successful one. Ever heard of Bush's company, Arbusto? Probably not. Arbusto was going busto before it eventually ended up in the hands of Harken Energy in 1986. Harken gave Bush a seat on the board, some stock options and a $120,000 consulting contract. The energy industry pumped $2.8 million into Bush's 2000 campaign.
Consider too that oil-industry behemoth ExxonMobil this week announced third-quarter earnings of $10.49 billion, largely on the backs of US consumers paying high prices for oil. This is the second-biggest quarterly profit ever recorded by a publicly traded US company.
ExxonMobil Sets Record for Annual U.S. Company Profit, at $39.5 Billion
That works out to about $13,000,000.00 per dead American kid.

Hookers, spies, cases full of dollars...how BP spent £45m to win 'Wild East' oil rights
GLEN OWEN
UK Daily Mail
Sunday May 13, 2007
Comment: This story appeared early today on the Daily Mail website. It has since been pulled without explanation. If correct, this story could bring down the entire British government which is probably why it was immediately subject to a D notice - a British government order to censor a story. Look out for a big story on this tomorrow.
BP executives working for Lord Browne spent millions of pounds on champagne-fuelled sex parties to help secure lucrative international oil contracts.
The company also worked with MI6 to help bring about changes in foreign governments, according to an astonishing account of life inside the oil giant.
Les Abrahams, who led BP's successful bid for a multi-million-pound deal with one of the former Soviet republics, today claims that Browne - who was forced to resign as chief executive last month after the collapse of legal proceedings against The Mail on Sunday - presided over an "anything goes" regime of sexual licence, spying and financial sweeteners.
From ethical champion to rogue interloper - BP's American nightmare
Accidents and allegations of market fixing destroy environmentalist image
BP's tie-up with its United States rival Amoco was supposed to create an ethical champion at the top of the global oil industry. Negotiated by Lord Browne over a bottle of Puligny-Montrachet in a London restaurant, it was one of the biggest mergers in history. But eight years on, BP's US arm is becoming America's most accident-prone business.
Federal regulators have accused BP of price gouging. Its corroded pipelines have been leaking in Alaska. A BP oil spill has polluted the coast of California. Civil rights activists are picketing its petrol stations.
To cap it all, a young woman, Eva Rowe, has forced a humbling apology from the company for shocking safety lapses that caused its Texas City oil refinery to explode last year, killing her parents and 13 other people. BP's yellow sunburst logo and its eco-friendly "Beyond Petroleum" slogan, which once won cautious admiration even from the green lobby, now leave a sour taste in the mouths of many Americans. BP's public image is at rock bottom and the company is seen by some as a rogue foreign interloper.
Blair hails 'transformed' relations with Libya at start of Africa tour
Tripoli announced ahead of the premier's arrival that it will sign a 900-million-dollar exploration deal with British energy giant BP, which would mark the company's return to Libya after a 33-year absence.
Translation: the "completely transformed" relationship between the UK and Libya is all about the oil, and the BP deal.
State makes big fuss over local couple's vegetable oil car fuel
Wetzel uses recycled vegetable oil, which he picks up weekly from an organization that uses it for frying food at its dining facility.
"They told me I am required to have a license and am obligated to pay a motor fuel tax," David Wetzel recalled. "Mr. May also told me the tax would be retroactive."
Since the initial visit by the agents on Jan. 4, the Wetzels have been involved in a struggle with the Illinois Department of Revenue. The couple, who live on a fixed budget, have been asked to post a $2,500 bond and threatened with felony charges.
