At least 70 killed in Myanmar quake

More than 70 people have been killed and 100 injured after a strong earthquake struck northeastern Myanmar near its border with Thailand, officials said, adding, the toll may rise.

The 6.8-magnitude quake shook buildings as far away as the Thai capital Bangkok, almost 800km from the epicentre, on Thursday night.

Canada no-confidence vote fells Harper government

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative government has fallen after a no-confidence vote passed in the parliament. The vote, engineered by the opposition Liberal Party and backed by two other opposition parties, triggers an election expected in early May. The vote stems from a ruling on Monday that the minority government was in contempt of parliament.

But the Conservatives are thought likely to keep power in a May election.

Canada Government Collapses on No-Confidence Vote

The Conservative government in Canada was toppled on Friday after a vote of no-confidence passed in the parliament by 156 to 145.

The vote, supported by the opposition Liberal Party and two other opponent parties, caused an election expected to occur in May.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expected to ask Governor General David Johnston to dissolve parliament on Saturday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Dear Canadian readers. Use this opportunity to scrub your government of those politicians more loyal to a foreign government than to Canada. Learn from the mistakes the American people made. No government can serve two masters, and a government that serves Israel cannot serve you!

Five-mile wide suspected oil slick spotted just north of Deepwater Horizon explosion site

A suspected oil slick has been spotted around 20 miles north from the site of the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion.

Several people reported seeing a rainbow sheen on the surface of the water several miles long just off the coast of Louisiana, to the National Response Center.

Source of latest Gulf oil spill determined

Anglo-Suisse Offshore Partners issued a statement last night expressing "surprise" that what it claimed was a minor leak from a well that's been out of use for some time could have produced miles-long slicks that garnered national media attention. The company has been in the process of permanently plugging the well -- located in a shallow area about 30 miles southeast of Grand Isle, La. Anglo-Suisse owned a cluster of five platforms in that area that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Radioactive tobacco

Cannabis is often compared to tobacco, with the damage caused by smoking tobacco given as a reason to prohibit use of cannabis. Yet most of the harms caused by tobacco use are due not to tar, but to the use of radioactive fertilizers. Surprisingly, radiation seems to be the most dangerous and important factor behind tobacco lung damage.

U.S. Supreme Court Gives Total Liability Shield to Big Pharma

In a 6-2 decision, the Court majority voted to reject substantial evidence that current law was fully intended to protect an American's right to sue a pharmaceutical corporation for injuries that could have been prevented if the company had elected to make a safer vaccine.

The court decision leaves parents with no way to hold vaccine makers accountable and no feasible way to get compensation for the injuries suffered by their children; furthermore, the decision removes all financial incentive for multi-national drug companies to make vaccines as safe as they can be.

Knesset Passes Bill Prohibiting Nakba Commemoration

The Israeli legislature has passed a bill that will require the state to fine local authorities or state funded bodies that commemorate the Palestinian Nakba Day.

Webmaster's Commentary:

For how long has Israel used the Holocaust to justify their crimes? For how long has the epithet "Holocaust Denier" been hurled by Zionists at anyone who didn't see Jews as the uniquely unfortunate victims of history, whose suffering must be acknowledged as greater than all others'?

Now the Israelis have made it illegal for Palestinians to commemorate their own Disaster, their banishment from their own homes and villages suffered at the hands of Israel.

And if Israel is willing to use the courts to re-write the history of 1948, then clearly they must be presumed to have used the courts to re-wrote the history of WW2!

Total War and interventionism's Sacred cow WWII and the H word Broken

Senior officers and troops side with protesters as envoys, editors, party chiefs and governors call on President Saleh to step down

In no way am I supporting the Nazi party or Hitler, Fascist Italy, or Imperial Japan or crimes from either side in WWII. I am simply pointing out that where as the losing side is rightly demonized, the same type of crimes by the allied powers are excused, blamed on their enemies, or omitted. And this allows for current powers to continue the total war mentality TODAY. After seeing this video you will understand why they had to make it illegal to question the holocaust. You may investigate it, but you can't publish your results unless they agree with the official story otherwise you can go to jail.

I'd like to mention that in the 10 thousand pages in combined Memoirs of Western WWII Leaders
Eisenhower, De Gaulle, and Churchill there is no mention of a holocaust or gas chambers. "These men all knew what transpired at Nuremberg. They saw the concentration camp photos, and actually visited some of the sites. They had access to the most confidential information available. And yet: no extermination camps, no ‘6 million’, no gas chambers, no Auschwitz—only beatings, starvation, and assorted brutalities. One could almost be forgiven for thinking there was no ‘Holocaust’ at all. " This isn't racist to bring up. It's just a fact. These historians and scientist don't gain a thing by this in fact they it's to their own detriment to tell the truth. There weren't any lethal gas chambers.

Merkel chides Netanyahu for failing to make 'a single step to advance peace'

A Deepening Rift Between Germany and Israel

On Feb. 18, Germany did something unthinkable. It voted in favor of a U.N. Security Council resolution calling the Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territory illegal and demanding the immediate halt of all settlement activity.

The resolution did not pass — the United States, the only one of the Security Council’s 15 members to vote against it, vetoed it. That did not stop the German vote from opening a serious rift between Germany and Israel.

And today German Chancellor Angela Merkel's helicopter almost crashes when both rotors fail simultaneously!

BERLIN: German Chancellor Angela Merkel narrowly escaped a helicopter crash while travelling to attend an election rally, a news report has said.

The chancellor travelled in a VIP helicopter of the federal police to Oldenburg in the state of Baaden Wuerttemberg to attend an election campaign rally of her
Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party on Wednesday evening.

After dropping her in Oldenburg, the helicopter left for Oberschliessheim, near
Munich with its three-man crew on board and just a few minutes into the flight and at an altitude of about 1,600 metres, both rotors of the Superpuma 332 chopper broke down.

It fell from the sky like a stone and the pilots succeeded in restarting the engines and stabilising the machine only a few hundred metres above the ground, Bild newspaper reported in its Sunday edition.

She was informed about the near-crash of her helicopter after she completed her campaign assignment in Oldenburg and from there she took a car for the next lap of her journey.

German authorities are not suspecting any attempts of sabotage in the incident.

Nevertheless, they are investigating how both rotors of the powerful 21-seat helicopter broke down simultaneously.

It was a brand new helicopter taken into the service of the federal police only in December, last year, Bild said.

Netanyahu: Israel ready to act with full force to stop missiles

Israel is ready to act with full force to stop missile attacks launched from the Gaza Strip, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday.

In addition to a drastic increase in rocket fire, a bomb detonated in Jerusalem on Wednesday that killed one and injured over 30.

Before meeting with Gates, Netanyahu promised a "tough reaction" to the bombing attack, adding that Israel would act "responsibly and wisely."

Israeli tank shell hits Gaza home, five hurt: medics

(Reuters) - Israeli tank fire struck a house in the Gaza Strip Tuesday, injuring at least five people, Palestinian medics said.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the report, but said 4 rockets had been fired at Israel during the day from the enclave, which is ruled by the Islamist Hamas group. Israel launched a series of air strikes in Gaza

Israel kills 8 in Gaza in deadliest day in months

(Reuters) - Israeli air strikes and shelling killed eight Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, medical officials said, in the deadliest day of conflict in the enclave in months. Palestinian medical officials said three youths aged 12, 16 and 17 who were playing football and an adult relative were killed by Israeli shelling, and four militants were killed later in an air strike elsewhere in the Gaza Strip.
Tuesday's death toll was the highest for a single day in months, provoking calls from militants for revenge, condemnation by a U.N. official and a demand from a Palestinian leader for foreign intervention to stop the violence.

Dan Rather's crew 'humiliated by Israeli security'

A crew for Dan Rather was harassed and humiliated by Israeli security officials, a producer for his show has said, accusing them of forcing the staffers to drop their pants for a strip search before seeing a Cabinet minister.

Mr. Rather said that in his career, he had never seen a crew forced to strip prior to an interview — including the one he conducted with Saddam Hussein," Glazer wrote.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Welcome to "every day normal" for Palestinians, Dan Rather!

IDF to track foreign anti-Israel groups

Israel's Military Intelligence has launched a new section that will be responsible of tracking foreign organizations located overseas, in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which aim to delegitimize the State of Israel.

The IDF was planning to form the new section, inside the Research Department, headed by an officer in the rank of a major, prior to the Gaza-bound flotilla last may, with the intention of collecting information on the Turkish group that organized the sail.

The new section will not track Israeli leftist organizations such as Breaking the Silence and Machsom Watch, which regularly criticize the IDF and government policies, and will not engage in active investigations or summon interrogees to Israel.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There are many, and grave reasons for reasonable criticism of Israel to be heard. Let's start with the siege of Gaza, and the predilection for always blaming the Palestinians for everything which goes wrong.

Let's turn to the torture of Palestinian kids to get them to "confess" to crimes either they or people they know allegedly committed. Let's turn to the use of white phosphorous on innocent school children during "Operation Cast Lead"; let's turn to the gunning down of unarmed aid workers on the Mavi Marara last year, including one American citizen; and let's turn to the utter destruction of Palestinians' cropland by settlers living on illegal settlements.

Everything I have mentioned is true, and corroborated by extensive evidence and documentation. So the moral question for the Israeli government and people has to be this; when does telling the truth about Israel's actions become a crime in the eyes of the Israeli government?!? Because if this becomes institutionalized, which appears to be happening, Israel will simply be delegitimizing itself without any outside help.

And the second thing Israelis have to be concerned about is its government's promise that it will not track any internal political moments which might be critical of Israel.

I would almost be willing to bet a falafel that this promise will not be kept!

'Repugnant': U.S. army apologises for graphic photos of soldiers with civilian corpses as violence is feared in Afghanistan

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1368314/German-newspaper-publishes-suppressed-photos-U-S-soldiers-posing-partially-naked-Afghan-corpse.html

Gruesome: The photos, in Der Spiegel's March 21 issue, are seen here

The U.S. Army has been forced to apologise over what they have deemed as 'repugnant' photographs of grinning American soldiers standing over bloodied and partially-naked Afghan bodies they had allegedly killed.

The pictures were published by German news organisation Der Spiegel and were among 4,000 they have obtained.

Meanwhile, commanders in Afghanistan are bracing themselves for a public backlash and possible riots over the 'trophy' photographs, especially since it has been alleged that the Afghan civilians were unarmed and innocent.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US army is not ashamed of their members shooting down innocent civilians in cold blood; they are only ashamed of it having been caught on camera.

As reported today at:

http://globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=23813

"If anyone had doubted that it was possible to out-Herod Herod in surpassing his predecessor George W. Bush's record of waging military aggression internationally, that illusion should be finally laid to rest. The Obama administration has increased American troop strength in Afghanistan (which has become the longest war in U.S. history on Obama's watch) to 100,000, with another 50,000 foreign forces serving under NATO's International Security Assistance Force.

It has also massively escalated unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) strikes in Pakistan, killing nearly 2,000 people in the last 26 months, including over 80 civilians slain in 12 missile strikes, the deadliest on a tribal meeting, in North Waziristan only two days before the attack on Libya was launched. The U.S. is a far better candidate for an international no-fly zone than any other nation in the world."

The Obama government has launched cruise missile strikes and run special forces operations in Yemen and conducted a deadly helicopter raid in Somalia.

It has also acquired the use of seven military bases in Colombia to assist the decades-long counterinsurgency war in the country and to threaten neighboring Venezuela and Ecuador."

In the thinking of the men who perpetrated these atrocities, what are a couple of mutilated corpses compared to all the death and destruction Obama has visited upon innocent people all over the world under his watch, while he let the banks rob American citizens of their homes to cover the fraudulent derivative mortgage scheme losses?

That kind of puts things in perspective, doesn't it?!?

Libye:

Global Protests & Uprisings Maps Time-Lapse

Reasons and False Pretexts: Why are They Making War on Libya?

http://globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=23983

Reason Number One: Regime change.

This was announced as the real objective the moment French president Nicolas Sarkozy took the extraordinary step of recognizing the rebels in Benghazi as "the only legitimate representative of the Libyan people". This recognition was an extraordinary violation of all diplomatic practice and principles. It meant non-recognition of the existing Libyan government and its institutions, which, contrary to the magical notions surrounding the word "dictator", cannot be reduced to the personality of one strongman. A major European nation, France, swept aside all those institutions to proclaim that an obscure group of rebels in a traditionally rebellious part of Libya constituted the North African nation’s legitimate government.

Since factually this was clearly not true, it could only be the proclamation of an objective to be reached by war. The French announcement was equivalent to a declaration of war against Libya, a war to defeat Qaddafi and put the mysterious rebels in power in his place.

False Pretext Number One: "to protect civilians".

The falsity of this pretext is obvious, first of all, because the UN Resolution authorizing military action "to protect civilians" was drawn up by France – whose objective was clearly regime change – and its Western allies. Had the real concern of the UN Security Council been to "protect innocent lives", it would have, could have, should have sent a strong neutral observer mission to find out what was really happening in Libya. There was no proof of rebel claims that the Qaddafi regime was slaughtering civilians. Had there been visible proof of such atrocities, we can be sure that they would have been shown regularly on prime time television. We have seen no such proof. A UN fact-finding mission could have very rapidly set the record straight, and the Security Council could then have acted on the basis of factual information rather than of claims by rebels seeking international aid for their cause.

Instead, the Security Council, now little more than an instrument of Western powers, rushed ahead with sanctions, referral of alleged present or expected "crimes against humanity" to the International Criminal Court, and finally an authorization of a "no-fly zone" which Western powers were certain to interpret as a license to wage all-out war against Libya.

Once the United States and its leading NATO allies are authorized to "protect civilians", they do so with the instruments they have: air strikes; bombing and cruise missiles. Air strikes, bombing and cruise missiles are not designed to "protect civilians" but rather to destroy military targets, which inevitably leads to killing civilians. Aside from such "collateral damage", what right do we have to kill Libyan military personnel manning airports and other Libyan defense facilities? What have they done to us?

Reason Number Two: Because it’s easy.

With NATO forces bogged down in Afghanistan, certain alliance leaders (but not all of them) could think it would be a neat idea to grab a quick and easy victory in a nice little "humanitarian war". This, they can hope, could revive enthusiasm for military operations and increase the flagging popularity of politicians able to strut around as champions of "democracy" and destroyers of "dictators". Libya looks like an easy target. There you have a huge country, mostly desert, with only about six million inhabitants. The country’s defense installations are all located along the Mediterranean coast, within easy reach of NATO country fighter jets and US cruise missiles. Libyan armed forces are small, weak and untested. It looks like a pushover, not quite as easy as Grenada but no harder than Serbia. Sarkozy and company can hope to strut their victory strut in short order.

False Pretext Number Two: Arabs asked for this war.

On March 12, the Arab League meeting in Cairo announced that it backed a no-fly zone in Libya. This provided cover for the French-led semi-NATO operation. "We are responding to the demands of the Arab world", they could claim. But which Arab world? On the one hand, Sarkozy brazenly presented his crusade against Qaddafi as a continuation of the democratic uprisings in the Arab world against their autocratic leaders, while at the same time pretending to respond to the demand of… the most autocratic of those leaders, namely the Gulf State princes, themselves busily suppressing their own democratic uprisings. (It is not known exactly how the Arab League reached that decision, but Syria and Algeria voiced strong objections.)

The Western public was expected not to realize that those Arab leaders have their own reasons for hating Qaddafi, which have nothing to do with the reasons for hating him voiced in the West. Qaddafi has openly told them off to their faces, pointing to their betrayal of Palestine, their treachery, their hypocrisy. Last year, incidentally, former British MP George Galloway recounted how, in contrast to the Egyptian government’s obstruction of aid to Gaza, his aid caravan had had its humanitarian cargo doubled during a stopover in Libya. Qaddafi long ago turned his back on the Arab world, considering its leaders hopeless, and turned to Africa.

While the Arab League’s self-serving stance against Qaddafi was hailed in the West, little attention was paid to the African Union’s unanimous opposition to war against the Libyan leader. Qaddafi has invested huge amounts of oil revenues in sub-Saharan Africa, building infrastructure and investing in development. The Western powers that overthrow him will continue to buy Libyan oil as before. The major difference could be that the new rulers, put in place by Europe, will follow the example of the Arab League sheikhs and shift their oil revenues from Africa to the London stock exchange and Western arms merchants.

Libya’s Slippery Slope

Gadhafi has promised “a long war.” Is the US prepared for that? For – make no mistake – it is the Americans who will be asked to take up the main burden of what is bound to degenerate into an extended “peacekeeping” operation. Our European allies just don’t have the military capacity, and none of the Arab countries, for all their bluster, are up to the job, either.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This military misadventure will continue just as long as necessary for the US to control the oil in this country.

But the question of troop strength and material should have been better considered before Obama took the action he did. It is interesting to note that last Friday, right after the passage of the UN resolution creating a no-fly zone over Libya, Congressman Rangel reintroduced the "National Service Bill", which is simply a fancy name for a draft. I do not believe that the timing of this act was accidental.

What Obama has done, while most of Congress was on vacation, was to unilaterally declare that he had the sole authority, under the UN Resolution and the US's War Powers Act, to work with our newly minted "coalition of the Willing" ,creating a no-fly zone, without ever going to Congress, (which now, apparently, only theoretically) is the only body in the US actually capable of declaring war. Under the War Powers Act,

Obama's got only 30 days to pursue this course before having to go to Congress ask for a continuation of these operations. I would not bet against him getting that continuance for these operations from Congress.

We are also making noises to Brazil about buying much more Brazilian oil. (The Brazilian government should be grateful that the US is talking about buying, rather than bombing, to secure their oil)

These two movements by the White House, taken together, may be signaling a potential attack on Iran, as both moves are necessary to secure the moment for a US/Israeli led attack against Iran.

Libya No-fly zone supporters demand UN vote

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - France, Britain and the United States pressed for a UN Security Council vote on Thursday on a no fly zone to halt Moamer Kadhafi's attacks on rebels.

While China, Russia, Germany and other members of the 15-member council have expressed opposition or doubts about military action in Libya, the United States said even stronger measures than a no-fly zone may be needed.

U.N. Authorizes Military Strikes on Libya

The United Nations Security Council authorized military force Thursday against Libyan leader Col. Moammar Gadhafi’s security forces, opening the way for airstrikes within days.

The U.N. action, pushed aggressively by France and the U.K., came as Col. Gadhafi’s security forces continued their assault toward Benghazi, the de-facto capital of rebels trying to end his 42-year rule.

European and American officials argued on the Security Council floor that an international campaign to stop Col. Gadhafi’s forces was required immediately to stave off a potential massacre of opposition forces and civilians.

At least 110 missiles

WASHINGTON - The U.S. military attacked Moammar Gadhafi's air defences Saturday with strikes along the Libyan coast that were launched by Navy vessels in the Mediterranean.

A senior military official said the assault would unfold in stages and target air defence installations around Tripoli, the capital, and a coastal area south of Benghazi. That's the rebel stronghold under attack by Gadhafi's forces.

U.S. Launches Cruise Missiles Against Qaddafi's Air Defenses

The U.S. Navy fires the first U.S. Tomahawk cruise missiles against Libyan leader's Muammar al-Qaddafi's air defenses Saturday, a military source tells Fox News.

The U.S. military strikes clear the way for European and other planes to enforce a no-fly zone designed to ground Qaddafi's air force and cripple his ability to inflict further violence on rebels, U.S. officials said.

US sending more warships to Mediterranean

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States is deploying additional warships to the Mediterranean to support possible United Nations-approved military action in Libya, the US Navy said Friday.

The USS Bataan, a helicopter-carrying amphibious assault ship, and two other vessels were deployed ahead of schedule, the navy said after the UN Security Council approved action to stop Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi's offensive against rebels.

US officials: Libyan operation could last months

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S.-led military action in Libya has bolstered rebels fighting Moammar Gadhafi's forces, but the international operation could continue for months, the Obama administration says.

Ahead of President Barack Obama's national address Monday to explain his decision to act against the Libyan leader, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in appearances on the Sunday talk shows that the intervention had effectively rendered Gadhafi's forces defenseless against air attacks and created the conditions for opposition advances westward.

In interviews taped Saturday, Gates and Clinton also defended the narrowly defined U.N. mandate to prevent atrocities against Libyan civilians and said the U.S. had largely accomplished its goals.

Turkey blocks no-fly zone role for NATO

France has proposed that a new political steering committee outside of NATO be responsible for overseeing military operations over Libya to enforce a UN-backed no-fly zone.

The announcement came after Turkey, a member of the NATO, warned on Tuesday that it could not agree to the military alliance taking over the enforcement of the no-fly zone if their mission went "outside the framework" of the UN decision.

Alain Juppe, the French foreign minister, said the new body would bring together foreign ministers from participating states, including Britain, France and the US, as well as the Arab League.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Translation: The US used the UN and NATO to legitimize an invasion of Libya, and now the UN and NATO are to be removed from the process.

China intensifies condemnation of Libya air strikes

The Middle East is an important source of oil for China. On the weekend, Saudi Arabia's Aramco announced its latest proposal to supply crude to a refinery in the southwest of China, where Beijing is building an oil pipeline that slices through Myanmar.

About half of China's crude imports last year came from the Middle East and North Africa. China wants to diversify supplies, but Arab countries and Iran hold so much of global reserves that they are sure to remain major suppliers

Webmaster's Commentary:

China has every reason to be profoundly annoyed by this move.

As reported on 9 March, 2011 at:

http://articles.latimes.com/2011/mar/09/business/la-fi-china-oil-20110310

In Libya, the world's 12th-largest oil exporter, China has emerged as a major investor and financial partner of strongman Moammar Kadafi. China is now the third-largest buyer of Libyan crude behind Italy and France. European and American oil firms have worked in Libya for years, but their governments have long sought to punish Kadaffi for terrorist ties. Meanwhile, China has stuck to a hands-off policy it has dubbed "non-interventionism."

China has every legitimate reason to be concerned about their development deals with Libya, post "regime change" in this country, and what it will mean in terms of China's economic development.

China calls for immediate cease-fire in Libya

BEIJING – China called Tuesday for an immediate cease-fire in Libya where the U.S. and European nations have launched punishing airstrikes to enforce a U.N. no-fly zone.

All parties must "immediately cease fire and resolve issues through peaceful means," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said at a regularly scheduled news conference, citing unconfirmed reports that the airstrikes had caused civilian deaths.

Germany pulls out of NATO operations

Germany has pulled out of NATO operations in the Mediterranean due to the disagreement over the forces' mission in Libya.

The German defense ministry said on Tuesday that Berlin pulled out of any military operations in the Mediterranean following the Western military alliance's involvement in the Libya conflict, DPA reported.

A ministry spokesman said two frigates and two other ships with a crew of 550 would be reverted to German command.

Some 60 to 70 German troops participating in NATO-operated AWACS surveillance operations in the Mediterranean would also be withdrawn, according to the ministry.

Following the disputes among NATO members over the military intervention in Libya, they met in Brussels to mend differences over what role the alliance should play in Libya.

West in "mediaeval crusade" on Gaddafi, Putin says

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Monday a U.N. resolution authorizing military action in Libya resembled "mediaeval calls for crusades" after Western forces launched a second wave of air strikes.

As diplomatic tempers over the campaign flared, officials in Tripoli said a missile intended to kill Muammar Gaddafi had destroyed a building in his fortified compound, which was heavily bombed in 1986 by the Reagan administration.

"It was a barbaric bombing," said government spokesman Mussa Ibrahim, showing pieces of shrapnel that he said came from the missile. "This contradicts American and Western (statements) ... that it is not their target to attack this place."

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, they have missed him twice and killed a lot of the other people standing around. When Reagan bombed Qaddafi (tricked into it by Israel) they blew up Qaddafi's five-year old daughter.

Bombing Libyan territory could mean large-scale conflict: Russia

“Any foreign military intervention will give Libya legal grounds to defend itself. We should do our best to avoid this highly dangerous scenario,” said Konstantin Kosachyov, head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian Parliament.

“You and I understand what ground operations mean: they probably mean the beginning of war, and not civil war but war involving international forces,” Mr. Medvedev said after a draft resolution to impose a no-fly zone was circulated in the Security Council.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Kosachyov may well be right on this.

Unfortunately, however, there are those in the bowels of power in DC who think this is a really grand idea.

This has nothing to do with the safety of Libyan civilians, and everything to do with the control of Libya's oil. But in order to sell such actions to the American people, such acts of aggression have to be carefully wrapped in the flag of "humanitarian relief".

However, the cold hard reality is that any military intervention here cannot possibly bring "humanitarian relief" to the people Libya by bombing them into bloody bits.

Allied forces strike Gadhafi compound; leader's whereabouts unknown

The heart of Moammar Gadhafi's compound in Tripoli lay in shambles Monday following bombing by the United States and its allies, prompting a debate about whether the allies were trying to kill the Libyan leader...

Air forces from France, Spain, Italy, Denmark and Britain flew missions to maintain a no-fly zone over Benghazi, Ham said.

Actions on Monday were focused on extending the no-fly zone to al-Brega, Misrata and then to Tripoli, a distance of about 1,000 kilometers (more than 600 miles).

Canadian and Belgian forces joined coalition forces Monday, he said, and aircraft carriers from Italy and France have added "significant capability" in the region.

Canadian General to Lead NATO Mission in Libya

http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=23968

Global Research Editor's Note

The appointment of a Canadian Commander to lead NATO forces implies that the Pentagon will essentially oversee the operation via its close bilateral military ties with Canada's Department of Defense.

It is worth noting in this regard that Lieutenant General Charlie Bouchard is currently in charge of a bilateral US-Canada command as Deputy Commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Bouchard has close ties to the US Air Force. He is a de facto US appointee.

Michel Chossudovsky, March 26, 2011

"the Canadian government refused to comment on reports that it had also moved elements of its elite commando unit JTF-2, the Canadian equivalent of British SAS, to the region...."

Ottawa - A Canadian Air Force general will take over command of the NATO mission in Libya, Canadian officials confirmed Friday morning.

Canadian Defence Minister Peter MacKay said Lt Gen Charles Bouchard, deputy commander of NATO's Allied Joint Force Command in Naples, has been designated head of the alliance's military campaign in Libya.

Bouchard, a former combat helicopter pilot, will work with his naval and air component commands to enforce both the no-fly zone...in Libya. .... Last week, Canada dispatched six CF-18 Hornet fighter jets to Italy, in addition to the Canadian Navy frigate HMCS Charlottetown, which was sent to the waters off Libya in early March.

Canada's current deployment in Libya comprises 435 personnel, mainly stationed at air bases in Italy and on the HMCS Charlottetown.

The fleet of six CF-18s and two refuelling planes grew on Thursday to include two CP-140 Aurora reconnaissance aircraft. Armed with sophisticated surveillance equipment, the reconnaissance planes will patrol the Mediterranean....

The Canadian government refused to comment on reports that it had also moved elements of its elite commando unit JTF-2, the Canadian equivalent of British SAS, to the region. .... US President Barack Obama and Defence Secretary Robert Gates have both said that American command of the operations would last only a few days.

MacKay urged NATO to take over the command.

NATO to take charge of Libya's no-fly zone, but not ground attacks

NATO announced late Thursday that it would take over enforcement of a United Nations-mandated no-fly zone over Libya, but doubts remained over whether the alliance would take full control of military operations there.

"We have taken on the responsibility for the no-fly zone, while the coalition still continues its activities," NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Thursday.

"This means right at this moment you will have two operations," he added, indicating that discussions would continue on putting NATO in charge of both operations, "but that decision has not been made yet."

Obama threatens military intervention in Libya

US president Barack Obama said yesterday that the United States and its Nato allies are considering military intervention in Libya in the strongest warning yet to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi that the world will not stand by as the embattled Libyan leader attacks his own people.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Obama threatens, he talks, he considers, he ponders, he consults, he declares, he discusses, but in the end he will do nothing. Israeli media is today confirming the story that Israel has sent hired mercenaries to Libya to support Qaddafi, and neither the United States nor Great Britain will ever stand up to Israel. They will stay back out of Libya while Israel tries to bring an end to the global revolt against the global bankers, while Obama preens in front of the cameras trying to pretend that the United States is still a nation that believes in democracy and the will of the people. But again, he will not actually do anything at all to challenge Israel's goal of keeping Qaddafi in power.

Operation Adyssey Dawn: Libya to get the "Kosovo Treatment"

President Barack Obama has now made the exact same speech Bill Clinton made on network news back in 1999 – promising "no ground forces" in the next American-led war of aggression. UN and NATO actions against Gaddafi’s Libya are signs of imperialist designs for Libya, including its enormous oil wealth. Moammar Gaddafi has rightfully called these attacks "colonial" and "crusader."

Webmaster's Commentary:

This move on the part of the US and UN has absolutely no real outcome planned to allegedly "protecting the people of Libya": this is about controlling Libyan oil, most practically as a prelude to a potential invasion of Iran, for which Israel has been advocating for years.

US: No Timeline for Libya War

Though President Obama and other officials were talking up the possibility of the new war in Libya scaling back, that does not mean it is going to be short. Speaking today during a visit to Cairo, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates confirmed that the war in Libya is open-ended.

Gates pointed out that UN Security Council Resolution 1973, upon which the US-led war is predicated, is “not time-limited” and that he therefore thought it wasn’t reasonable to set a timeline for when the war would actually end.

Obama rules out 'land invasion' in Libya

President Barack Obama Wednesday categorically ruled out a land invasion to oust Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi as coalition forces launched a fifth day of air strikes against government military targets in the North African nation.

And Obama said the U.S. this week will be pulling back from its dominant role in the international campaign aimed at preventing Gadhafi from attacking civilians.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Considering the track record this man has in terms of keeping his promises to the American people and the world, I wouldn't hold my breath on this one.

He will find something else to call it, but if the air campaign is not successful (and it wasn't in Vietnam), what other tactics does he have available to finish the job?!?!?

The short answer is, none. Having grounded Gaddafi's air force does not account for dealing with the not inconsiderable amounts of "boots in the ground" Gaddafi has at his disposal, along with money with which to hire mercenaries.

The situation in Libya is way past dialogue at this moment and some kind of negotiated settlement, with tensions running at fever pitch in both the pro-Gaddafi and anti-Gaddafi camps.

Costs of Libya Operation Already Piling Up

With U.N. coalition forces bombarding Libyan leader Muammar el-Qaddafi from the sea and air, the United States’ part in the operation could ultimately hit several billion dollars -- and require the Pentagon to request emergency funding from Congress to pay for it.

The first day of Operation Odyssey Dawn had a price tag that was well over $100 million for the U.S. in missiles alone.

Depleted uranium: a strange way to protect Libyan civilians

In the first 24 hours of the Libyan attack, US B-2s dropped forty-five 2,000-pound bombs. These massive bombs, along with the Cruise missiles launched from British and French planes and ships, all contained depleted uranium (DU) warheads.

DU is the waste product from the process of enriching uranium ore. It is used in nuclear weapons and reactors. Because it is a very heavy substance, 1.7 times denser than lead, it is highly valued by the military for its ability to punch through armored vehicles and buildings. When a weapon made with a DU tip strikes a solid object like the side of a tank, it goes straight through it, then erupts in a burning cloud of vapor. The vapor settles as dust, which is not only poisonous, but also radioactive.

Costs Of Libya Operation Already Piling Up; $150 Million On Day 1; Will Reach Several Billion Within Weeks

With U.N. coalition forces bombarding Libyan leader Muammar el-Qaddafi from the sea and air, the United States’ part in the operation could ultimately hit several billion dollars -- and require the Pentagon to request emergency funding from Congress to pay for it.

Gold key to financing Gaddafi struggle

The international community has hit Muammer Gaddafi with a raft of sanctions and asset freezes aimed at cutting off his funding. But the embattled Libyan leader is sitting on a pot of gold.

The Libyan central bank – which is under Colonel Gaddafi’s control – holds 143.8 tonnes of gold, according to the latest data from the International Monetary Fund, although some suspect the true amount could be several tonnes higher.

Those reserves, among the top 25 in the world, are worth more than $6.5bn at current prices, enough to pay a small army of mercenaries for months or even years.

Ground operation in Libya could start in April - Russian intelligence

The international coalition force is planning a ground operation in Libya that could start in late April, a high-ranking Russian intelligence service source said on Friday.

"Information coming via different channels shows that NATO countries, with the active participation of Britain and the United States, are developing a plan for a ground operation on Libyan territory," he said.

350 British special forces already deep inside Libya

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1369763/Libya-Proof-winning-MoD-footage-airstrikes-Gaddafi-tanks.html

While Chancellor George Osborne repeated that UK ground troops would not be involved, the Daily Mail can reveal there are an estimated 350 already mounting covert operations.
In total it is understood that just under 250 UK special forces soldiers and their support have been in Libya since before the launch of air strikes to enforce the no-fly zone against Gaddafi’s forces.
The troops in Libya were drawn from a squadron of SAS and SBS personnel, some who have been in the country for a month and are being re-supplied with water, food and ammunition via airdrops from Cyprus.

US May Escalate Urban Strikes in Libya, Pentagon Confirms

Though the UN mandate for Libya was primarily about the “no-fly zone,” and additional warplanes from various nations mean the US role in this is declining somewhat, it does not mean the US role in the war is shrinking. Rather, Pentagon officials say, they are planning escalations in other areas.

In particular the Pentagon appears keen on moving more specialized aircraft, and helicopter gunships, into Libya to launch attacks on ground troops, and to engage in fights in and around the major cities being contested by the rebels and the Gadhafi regime.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It's just a matter of time before the US has boots on the ground in Libya, no matter what Obama has vowed he will not allow to happen.

There is nothing else to do when airstrikes fail to accomplish their agenda, which is bringing Gaddafi either down (or out) and seizing control of Libya's oil and water resources; also it is highly unlikely that air strikes alone will bring about that outcome.

Those in the bowels of power in Washington, in Paris, and in London, who do not understand the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them, and this is precisely the case with this military misadventure which may well go regional, if not global, plunging the world into an all-out war.

Is Libya being bombed by bloody U.S. Zio thugs because Gaddafi wants to introduce gold dinar?

The present World Economic Crisis has forced a number of governments to consider introduction of an interstate gold currency, writes a minor Russian oligarch Sterligov on his blog.

Since gold yuan coinage was announced by China, talks about the gold standard had been brought up in the Middle East. The main initiator of non-payment in dollars and euros is the Leader and Guide of the Revolution in Libya, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. He called on Arab and African world to adopt a single current - the gold dinar.

If You Don't Think Libya Is About Oil, Read This

The Treasury just put out a statement concerning various companies owned by Libya's National Oil Corporation that are subject to sanctions. Most intriguing is this part of the statement:

TREASURY IDENTIFIES 14 COMPANIES OWNED BY LIBYA’S NATIONAL OIL CORPORATION AS SUBJECT TO SANCTIONS

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) today identified 14 companies owned by Libya’s National Oil Corporation, as subject to sanctions pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 13566.

The National Oil Corporation is the centerpiece of Libya’s state-owned oil apparatus, and controls a network of companies involved in oil exploration, production, and sale. E.O. 13566 blocks all property and interests in property of the Government of Libya and its agencies, instrumentalities and controlled entities within U.S. jurisdiction, whether specifically identified by OFAC or not. U.S. persons are prohibited from engaging in business with any Libyan state-owned entity. Today’s identifications are intended to aid financial institutions in meeting their obligations under E.O. 13566.

Treasury will continue monitoring the National Oil Corporation’s operations in Libya. Should National Oil Corporation subsidiaries or facilities come under different ownership and control, Treasury may consider authorizing dealings with such entities.

Reason for war? Gaddafi wanted to nationalise oil

The Libyan leader proposed the nationalisation of U.S. oil companies, as well as those of UK, Germany, Spain, Norway, Canada and Italy in 2009.

These statements have worried the main foreign companies operating in Libya: Anglo-Dutch Shell, British Petroleum, U.S. ExxonMobil, Hess Corp., Marathon Oil, Occidental Petroleum and ConocoPhillips, the Spanish Repsol, Germany's Wintershall, Austria's OMV , Norway's Statoil, Eni and Canada's Petro Canada.

Chávez’s purchase of $15 billion in weapons causes concern in Latin America

With the acquisition of hundreds of tanks, helicopters and bulletproof vehicles as well as submarines and missile networks, Venezuela is arming itself at a speed unprecedented in the history of the South American country.

Experts consulted by El Nuevo Herald have said that Hugo Chávez’s has created unrest in the region with purchases to expand its military that total more than $15 billion.

he list includes 92 mid-size T-72B1V tanks, about 240 bulletproof infantry vehicles (BMP-3 and 8x8 BTR-80), nine submarines, nearly 50 vessels of different sizes, dozens of Sukhoi Su-30MK2 fighting airplanes, an undetermined number of Chinese J-10 fighter airplanes, and close to a hundred Russian helicopters, a good part of which were designed for combat operations.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Cesar Chavez is many things, but he is nobody's fool.

He understands full well that elements in the US government would very much like to orchestrate a "regime change" in Venezuela, particularly because of its vast oil reserves.

As reported on 16 January, 2011, at:

"Venezuela has overtaken Saudi Arabia as the world leader in oil reserves with certified deposits leaping to 297 billion barrels at the end of 2010, President Hugo Chavez's government said Saturday."

"Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez told Reuters that the new reserves, which pushed the total 41 percent higher than the previous year, were booked in the South American OPEC member's vast Orinoco extra heavy crude belt."

Cost of military campaign in Libya could wipe out GOP's spending cuts

U.S. military operations in Libya could wipe out a significant chunk of the budget cuts won by congressional Republicans in recent weeks, defense analysts say.

GOP leaders have trumpeted enacted spending reductions that amount to more than $285 million per day since the beginning of March.

But defense analysts say the Pentagon could be burning through more than $100 million per day in Libya, putting those budget savings at risk.

Webmaster's Commentary:

....ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS A DAY?!?; While homeless Veterans sleep in our streets, peoples' jobs keep getting outsourced, and our infrastructure is collapsing around us?!?

"Cui bono" - who benefits from this? The large oil companies, at the end of the day, cronies of the people who control this country; that's who. This is another flagrant example of a publicly funded war ultimately for private profits.

And to that absurd statement by Ben Rhodes that “It's important to have a model where the international community bears a cost … of these actions going forward, because the United States alone can't bear the burden of these costs over time,” ; Ben, don't hold your breath for foreign financial support of yet another illegal and immoral war. The US may literally be on its own this time. Germany has already pulled out of the coalition, probably with a number more to come when the leadership of those countries originally enthusiastic about such a war realize that the endgame may well not be close at hand.

Airstrikes force Gadhafi to fall back from key western city; NATO ships patrol Libyan coast

International airstrikes forced Moammar Gadhafi’s tanks to roll back from the western city of Misrata on Wednesday, a local doctor said, giving respite to civilians who have endured more than a week of attacks and a punishing blockade. In the east, rebels tried to organize politically and militarily as civilians fled another strategic city.

As the international air campaign appeared to weaken Gadhafi’s forces even in the western region that has been his stronghold, Western diplomats neared an agreement to let NATO assume responsibility for the no-fly zone and its warships began patrolling off the Mediterranean coast. Both they and rebels, who took tentative steps toward forming a government in the east on Wednesday, appeared to be preparing for a battle that could last some time.

Webmaster's Commentary:

No country on earth can begin to justify the killing of civilians with the lame excuse that you are "killing them in order to save them."

This has absolutely nothing to do with "humanitarian response" to uprisings here, and everything to do with seizing and controlling Libyan oil.

From the American military perspective, this war cannot go on for a long period of time, because it has neither the troop strength nor the material resources to fight a protracted war, in light of the fact that American manufacturing has been pretty well off-shored.

Gaddafi fully understands this, so is doing his utmost to make sure that this military confrontation is as drawn out as possible;, although, with so much of Libyan military infrastructure damaged, it is questionable as to how long his loyalists will be able to withstand this assault.

Wall Street Journal - U.S. Wavers on 'Regime Change'

After weeks of internal debate on how to respond to uprisings in the Arab world, the Obama administration is settling on a Middle East strategy: help keep longtime allies who are willing to reform in power, even if that means the full democratic demands of their newly emboldened citizens might have to wait.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I hate being right all the time.

Israel decides they want Qaddafi to stay in power and hires mercenaries (with US taxpayer money) to crush the freedom movement, so President Pussy, as I predicted he would, drops all pretense about Democracy and "Will of the people" and bows to his Israeli masters to keep a tyrant in power.

For over 200 years, young Americans have risked and lost life and limb fighting for the principles of Democracy and freedom this nation was founded on, and to please their Israeli masters the US Government has just lightly cast aside everything those soldiers were crippled and killed to preserve. Obama and Israel's lackeys in Congress just spit in the face of every man and woman in uniform who joined the military to preserve the principles of Democracy, and now may find themselves ordered to protect a dictator.

"We have always been at war with Eastasia" -- 1984

If the US Government is willing to turn their backs on Democracy in other nations when Israel commands it; do you think they will hesitate to turn their backs on Democracy in this country when Israel demands it?

Please share this treason against the founding principles of the United States with everyone you know. I am going to keep this story at the top of the page for a while today.

General Petraeus jokes with Robert Gates about attacking Libya

Robert Gates, the US Secretary of Defence, has been caught joking with General David Petraeus about bombing Libya while on a visit to Afghanistan.

Apparently unaware of an open microphone, Gen Petraeus greeted Mr Gates at Kabul airport joking: “Welcome back, sir, flying a little bigger plane than normal ... you gonna launch some attacks on Libya or something?”
The US Defence Secretary responded to the comment by laughing and replied, “yeah, exactly”

Oil installations ablaze in Libya as battles rage

RAS LANOUF, Libya (AP) - A giant yellow fireball shot into the sky, trailed by thick plumes of black smoke Wednesday after fighting between rebels and forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi set two oil installations ablaze and inflicted yet more damage on Libya's crippled energy industry.

In the west, Gadhafi claimed victory in recapturing Zawiya, the city closest to the capital that had fallen into opposition hands. The claim could not immediately be verified; phone lines there have not been working during a deadly, six-day siege.

State TV showed a crowd of hundreds, purportedly in Zawiya's main square, shouting "The people want Colonel Gadhafi!" but the location of the rally could not be independently confirmed.

British Troops Caught in Libya

Webmaster's Commentary:

Given that Israel is supporting Qaddafi with mercenaries, and given that the British soldiers were captured by the rebels, it may be that Great Britain has quietly changed sides under orders from Tel Aviv and was sabotaging the revolution, possibly including the explosion of the ammo dump. Recall that the very start of the invasion of Iraq, two SAS men were caught wearing Arab clothing and driving around in a car full of explosives, engaged in false-flag bombings.

8 British troops captured in Libya

According to a report published by The Sunday Times, the unexpected presence of a British special forces unit along with the diplomat "angered Libyan opposition figures, who ordered the soldiers to be locked up on a military base."

The Britons have reportedly been taken to Benghazi in eastern Libya. The diplomat they were protecting had wanted to contact the anti-government forces.

The British newspaper added that anti-government forces “fear Muammar Gaddafi could use any evidence of Western military interference to rally patriotic support for his regime."

Webmaster's Commentary:

If the SAS were truly there to help the revolution against Qaddafi, there is no reason for the rebels to take them prisoner. It simply does not make sense given that it would alienate an entire nation which on the face of it is on their side.

Therefore, if the SAS were captured by the rebels, it means the UK is fighting in Qaddafi's side, which I predicted would be the case after it came out that Israel was sending hired mercenaries to help Qaddafi crush the revolution.

It is worth recalling that at the start of the invasion of Iraq, SAS soldiers were captured dressed as Arabs with a car full of explosives.

Which side is the UK really on?

After all the talk about freedom and democracy, how will Obama sell the American people on switching sides and supporting a tyrant by crushing the Libyan freedom movement?

GORDON DUFF: SUNDAY MORNING March 6, 2011

The SAS team, theoretically with a “diplomat,” a term the US has damaged beyond repair, is said to have been on a hunt for WMD’s in Libya when it was taken into custody. Yesterday’s explosion, a kart load of shotgun shells that flattened half a kilometer seems to have gotten some attention. This is an intel leak from Britain. They are never accidental. I am just passing it on.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The story is already changing. Yesterday they were trying to contact the revolution and today they are hunting for WMDs.

Webmaster's Commentary:

ISRAEL KEEPS THE WORLD UNDER THE YOKE OF DICTATORSHIP!

In Palestine, in the attack on the aid flotilla, and now with Israel's mercenaries in Libya, Israel shows its true face to the world. The nation once claimed to be the only Democracy in the Middle East is now working to crush Democracy everywhere across the globe through covert action, subversion, and outright intervention; to bring the world into a global dictatorship to serve the hellish doctrine that one group of people has a God-given right to all of life's blessings and everyone else should be forced to live on the scraps that drop from Israel's table.

We see Israel for what it truly is.

Do not let Israel get away with hiding behind the tragedy of the quake and tsunami, Please link the above video everywhere it being reported that Qaddafi is defeating the Democracy movement in Libya, because Qaddafi isn't doing it; Israel is, and Qaddafi in the aftermath will be as much a slave to Israel as the US Government.

Great Manmade River

The Great Man-Made River (GMR, ????? ??????? ??????) is a network of pipes that supplies water to the Sahara Desert in Libya, from the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System fossil aquifer. It is the world's largest irrigation project.[1]

According to its website, it is the largest underground network of pipes and aqueducts in the world. It consists of more than 1,300 wells, most more than 500 m deep, and supplies 6,500,000 m³ of fresh water per day to the cities of Tripoli, Benghazi, Sirt and elsewhere. Muammar al-Gaddafi has described it as the "Eighth Wonder of the World."[2]

Webmaster's Commentary:

Now, who in the Middle East is desperate to steal other nations' water?

This War is for Us
by Ariel Natan Pasko
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/Articles/Article.aspx/2125

Stop and think for a moment: the last Gulf War in 1991 ended erev - just before - Purim. This Gulf War began motzei - just after - Shushan Purim. Get the picture? In between, "The Jews had light, and gladness, and joy, and honor." (Book of Esther 8:16)

Of course this war against Iraq and Saddam Hussein is for us. Even the anti-Semites, like Patrick J. Buchanan and Congressman Jim Moran know it. (...)

However, we already knew that this war is for us - i.e., the Jews and Israel. Chazal - our sages - throughout the ages have explained the Torah, telling us that everything that happens in the world is for the benefit of the Jewish People.

(...)Read the Purim story in Megilat Esther again, it is a rags to riches story on a national scale. Haman, the proto-typical anti-Semite, plans mass murder of the Jews and in the end pays with his life, the life of his ten sons - all hanged - and the Jews kill 75, 800 members of the anti-Semitic - i.e. Nazi - party of the time.

This is not so different from the Nuremberg Trials after World War II, when 23 Nazi war criminals were tried. Originally 11 were to have the death penalty imposed if found guilty. Everybody in those days thought that they would be shot - as is customary in military executions - or get the electric chair - as was common in the United States. But when the judges announced the verdict of guilty, they also said that hanging would be the method of execution. Two hours before the execution, they found Hermann Goering dead in his cell. He had committed suicide. That left only 10 Nazis to execute.

There is more to this story than meets the eye. In Megilat Esther (9:7-9), when it describes the execution of Haman's ten sons, their names are listed in a vertical column. If you look at the Hebrew closely, you'll notice extra-small letters in three of the names. The first name, Parshandata, has a small tav. The seventh name, Parmashta, has a small shin. The tenth name, Vayzata, has a small zayn. Hebrew letters are also used as numbers, as well as for dates in the Jewish calendar. Tav, shin, zayn numerically means 707, corresponding to the year 5707, which began with Rosh HaShanah - the Jewish New Year - on September 25, 1946. On October 16, 1946, as foreshadowed in the names of Haman's ten sons, ten Nazi leaders were hanged as war criminals. And if that doesn't impress you, out of nowhere, with the rope around his neck, Julius Schtreicher - editor of Der Sturmer, the Nazi propaganda newspaper - shouted out with flaming hatred in his eyes, just as the trap door opened, "Purimfest 1946!" It was reported in the international press of the day.

As I said earlier, of course this war is for the Jews and Israel, and instead of hiding from the accusation, or crying, "anti-Semitic slur", we should gratefully acknowledge what the Master of the Universe is doing to our enemies for us. Saddam Hussein, Yasser Arafat, Bashar Assad, Osama Bin-Laden, and the other dictators, terrorists and mullahs of the region, are the modern day Hamans and Hitlers.(...)

Yes, the war is for the Jews.
But it is also for all decent, peace-loving and freedom-loving people. Just as when the Jews were saved from Egyptian slavery, liberated, given the Torah at Mt. Sinai, and brought into the Holy Land, the world now has a great opportunity to rid itself of the Hamans, Hitlers, and Pharaohs who want to kill or enslave them today. (lire la suite...)

(...) Blu Greenberg, an Orthodox feminist leader based in New York, supports the Bush administration’s campaign against Iraq as a “preventive war,” much as the ancient Jews defended themselves against Haman’s plot to destroy them.(...)
Rabbi Martin Weiner of San Francisco, outgoing president of the Reform movement’s rabbinical union, the Central Conference of American Rabbis, used Shabbat Zachor to draw a line from Amalek to Hitler to Saddam. A modern-day Amalek, Saddam has attacked four of his neighbors, gassed tens of thousands of his own people and pays stipends to suicide bombers, Weiner said, so “it’s terribly important to remove him.” Last September, Weiner was among those who backed a resolution from the Reform movement’s Union of American Hebrew Congregations urging a pre-emptive strike against Iraq, if Congress supported it and U.N. backing was sought. But for Reform Rabbi Don Rossoff, of Temple B’nai Or in Morristown, N.J., Amalek casts a very different shadow. Rossoff said he has refrained from publicly sermonizing this Purim about the war, which he opposes, because he is “haunted by Baruch Goldstein, who called the Arabs Amalek.” Goldstein, a doctor in an Israeli settlement near the West Bank city of Hebron, shot to death 29 Palestinians praying in Hebron’s Tomb of the Patriarch on Purim Day in 1994. Saddam is “a tyrannical, murderous dictator” who “ would probably wipe out Israel if he could,” Rossoff added. “But he’s not the only one around. His name just starts with ‘H,’ ” like Haman.(...)

Protests Spread To Saudi Arabia

While the biggest threat to the Middle East region is the possibility that the population of Saudi Arabia may try to imitate what has been happening in the area, thereby bringing total chaos to the established regional geopolitical and more importantly, energy, structure, the first protests in the Saudi Arabia city of Jeddah are already in the books.

Saudi Arabian forces prepare to enter Bahrain after day of clashes

The Crown Prince of Bahrain is expected to formally invite security forces from Saudi Arabia into his country today, as part of a request for support from other members of the six-member Gulf Co-operation Council.

Thousands of demonstrators on Sunday cut off Bahrain's financial centre and drove back police trying to eject them from the capital's central roundabout, while protesters also clashed with government supporters on the campus of the main university.

The Proxy Battle in Bahrain

For Saudi Arabia, the issue in Bahrain is less whether Bahrain will attain popular rule than whether Iranian and Shiite influence will grow.

Now, after a decade that seemed to tilt the regional balance toward Iran, Saudi Arabia decided that Bahrain was the place to put its thumb more heavily on the scale. It sent troops under the auspices of the Gulf Cooperation Council to help crush pro-democracy demonstrations because most of the protesters were Shiites challenging a Sunni king.

“If the political opposition in Bahrain wins, Saudi loses in this regional context,” said Mustafa el-Labbad, director of Al Sharq Center for Regional and Strategic Studies in Cairo. “Saudi is regarding itself as the defender of Sunnis. And Iran is trying to defend Shiites in the region.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

This situation could probably be better characterized as a proxy war between the US and Iran, perhaps as the initial prelude through which to create a "justification" for a US military strike against Iran.

'US move on Bahrain to secure Israel'

The US has asked Saudi Arabia to intervene in Bahrain as such a move would benefit Israel and other unpopular regimes in the Middle East, says a former US Senate contender.

“I think... there was an agreement between [US Defense Secretary Robert] Gates and the Saudi regime that they would carry this out either at the behest of the United States or the bare minimum with a green light from the United States to proceed,” Mark Dankof told Press TV on Thursday.

Dankof said that the American foreign policy in the Middle East was ultimately about three things, namely "supporting Israel at all costs; supporting international central banking interests at all costs... and then of course, the natural gas and oil consortiums."

Plan for martial law in Bahrain

A parliament group has asked Bahrain's king to impose martial law after a month of unrest which has left the tiny Gulf nation sharply divided between minority Sunni Muslims backing the ruling system and Shiites demanding sweeping changes.

Bahrain: U.S. Backs Saudi Military Intervention, Conflict With Iran

On March 14 Saudi Arabia and its Gulf Cooperation Council partner the United Arab Emirates deployed 1,000 troops, 500 security personnel and armored troop carriers across the 25-mile King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain to shore up their fellow monarchy after a month of protests against the Al Khalifa dynasty. The following day the Bahraini government declared a three-month state of emergency and authorized the military "to take necessary steps to restore national security." On March 16 government security forces staged a violent crackdown against protesters in the nation's capital with tanks, armored personnel carriers and helicopters, killing at least two people and injuring hundreds.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So it appears that the geopolitcal/military assets to have been put into place.

One has to wonder if these people are insane enough to actually be contemplating a military conflict against Iran, particularly in light of the nuclear catastrophe in Japan, and its implications for the rest of the world.

US Fleet Commander Met Head of Bahrain Defense Forces Before Crackdown

There is no transcript or official statement from this meeting, but it’s beyond sense to think that the arrival of the Saudis and GCC forces and the plan to crackdown was not a topic. There’s even a nice photo of them having their chat, which you can view here.

There is, however, no mention of the visit or similar photo on the Fifth Fleet’s webpages.

I guess such a friendly meeting with the leader of the forces who attacked the peaceful protesters at Pearl, laid siege to the Salmaniya hospital and attacked multiple villages in the last few days is a bit too embarrassing.

Bahrain Protests: More Than 100,000 March Through Capital As Helicopters Circle Overhead

Bahrain's king ordered the release of some political prisoners Tuesday, conceding to another opposition demand as the embattled monarchy tries to engage protesters in talks aimed at ending an uprising that has entered its second week.

The king's decree – which covers several Shiite activists accused of plotting against the state – adds to the brinksmanship on both sides that has included a massive pro-government rally Monday, an opposition march in response and the planned return of a prominent opposition figure from exile.

It's unclear how many prisoners will be freed, said government spokeswoman Maysoon Sabkar.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One has to admire the courage of these protestors.

I have a sense that that their demands will be met. But one thing is certain; their fear of what the Bahraini government may do to them is gone.

Roughly 1/5 of Bahrain’s Population Out in Protests

The island nation of Bahrain’s Pearl Square Roundabout has been the site of major protests for more than a week, but today they were an absolute mass of people, with over 100,000 protesters, fully 1/5 of the island’s population, massed to protest against the regime.

Bahrain: Uprising Against the US-backed Regime Gains Critical Mass

Bahrain’s uprising against the US-backed ruling elite is gathering critical mass, with the Persian Gulf island state seeing the biggest demonstration ever last night. Some 200,000 people took the main highway leading to the financial district in the capital, Manama, shouting in unison for the regime to go.

Their protest is now firmly established at Pearl Square, where tents have been erected and basic amenities installed to cope with the thousands who now camp there nightly. In deliberate replication of the demonstrations at Tahrir Square in Egypt’s capital, Cairo, the protesters in Bahrain are saying that they are not moving until their demands are met.

IDEX: DCI Crowd-Control Specialists Work With Bahrain Army

ABU DHABI - Defense Conseil International (DCI), a French state-owed training company, has three crowd-control specialists acting as advisers to the Bahrain Army, chief executive Jean-Louis Rotrubin said at the IDEX trade show.

The advisers, drawn from the French Gendarmerie Nationale and elite GIGN special forces unit, are part of a program to train Bahrain special Zforces in non-lethal crowd control and the avoidance of the use of deadly force, he said. The program is just beginning.
The program aims "to develop a new approach to how manage crowds in cities," Rotrubin said.

Bahrain forces fire on protesters

Soldiers opened fire Friday on thousands of protesters defying a government ban and streaming toward the landmark square that had been the symbolic center of the uprising to break the political grip of the Gulf nation's leaders.

Officials at the main Salmaniya hospital said at least 50 people were injured, some with gunshot wounds. Some doctors and medics on emergency medical teams were in tears as they tended to the wounded. X-rays showed bullets still lodged inside victims.

Saudi Arabia says it's ready to help Bahrain's rulers

Saudi Arabia said Sunday that it stands ready "with all its capabilities" to shore up Bahrain's ruling royal family if a standoff with the Shiite-led opposition is not resolved soon, underscoring the kingdom's deep concern about its neighbor's ongoing political crisis.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Saudi Arabia's Kind Abdullah, Crown Prince Sultan (and the US Pentagon): any kind of military incursion into Bahrain may well trigger revolt in Saudi Arabia, as well as inflaming and enlarging the revolt in Bahrain.

Eyewitnesses: 30 tanks spotted en route to Bahrain from Saudi Arabia

Bahrain--Eyewitnesses have reported seeing an estimated 30 tanks being transported into Bahrain from Saudi Arabia on Monday night at around 6:45pm local time. The tanks were sighted along the King Fahd causeway, which links the small island-nation of Bahrain to Saudi Arabia.

Commuters traveling along the 25-km causeway were held up due to the presence of “15 tank carriers carrying two tanks each heading towards Bahrain.” Civilian eyewitnesses could not, however, confirm whether the tanks belonged to the Saudi military.

The presence of Saudi military hardware in Bahrain is considered highly unusual.

The U.S. Military Empire Meets Dictatorship in Bahrain

The widespread protests in the Middle East are bringing the ugly reality of U.S. foreign policy into the consciousness of the American people. While most Americans are sympathizing with the people who are risking their lives in resistance to tyranny, Americans are also having to face the discomforting fact that their very own government is, in large part, responsible for the tyranny that those people are opposing. Through a combination of U.S. foreign aid and U.S. foreign military bases, the U.S. government has been partnering with, cozying up to, training, and supporting the tyrannical regimes that foreign citizens are now rebelling against.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What those in the bowels of power in DC pathologically fail to factor into their geopolitical calculations is very simple: when peaceful evolution is impossible, violent revolution is almost always inevitable.

One would think that those formulating US foreign policy would have understood this by now, but apparently, they do not; they are deaf, blind, and dumb to the unintended consequences of supporting any of the many tinpot dictators we have supported in the Middle East, because they are "our thugs" in the region.

Bahrain protesters take control of main square

Thousands of protesters poured into a main square in Bahrain's capital Tuesday in an Egypt-style rebellion that sharply escalated pressure on authorities as the Arab push for change gripped the Gulf for the first time.

Security forces have battled demonstrators calling for political reforms and greater freedoms over two days, leading to the deaths of two protesters and the main opposition group vowing to freeze its work in parliament in protest.

2 killed in anti-government protest in Bahrain

The recent wave of popular upheaval in the Middle East has spread to Bahrain. Anti-government demonstrators clashed with riot police in the Arab Gulf state on Monday, leaving at least 2 citizens dead.

In Bahrain, a Sunni Muslim minority rules over a Shia majority who account for 70 percent of the population.

Discontented Shia citizens used the Internet to call for the demonstrations. Up to several thousands of people demonstrated in the outskirts of the capital Manama and elsewhere.

Security police fired teargas and rubber bullets to break up the demonstrations.

Reuters news agency reports that at least 2 citizens have been killed and more than 20 wounded in the clashes.

Tanks in Bahrain block ambulances

Tanks in the Bahraini capital, Manama, prevent ambulances from taking the victims of clashes to hospitals, as the pro-democracy uprising in the country has entered its fourth day, a report says.

The report also added that Bahraini security forces attack and beat medical workers who are helping the victims on Thursday.

Pro-democracy uprising in Bahrain has entered its fourth day, as protesters, inspired by revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia, have taken to the streets to protest against the government's dictatorial policies.

More than a dozen army tanks and several military ambulances and trucks are seen in a main highway in the central Manama.

According to witnesses, the nearby roads have almost been cleared of civilian traffic.

US Faces New Test Over Bahrain Violence

Both Clinton and Pentagon chief Robert Gates called their Bahraini counterparts Thursday to urge restraint on the part of the government’s security forces.

"I called my counterpart in Bahrain this morning and directly conveyed our deep concerns about the actions of the security forces, and I emphasized how important it was that, given there will be both funerals and prayers tomorrow, that that not be marred by violence," Clinton told reporters. Describing Bahrain as a "friend and an ally," she stressed that "all people have universal rights, including the right to peaceful assembly."

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US cannot have it both ways here.

The US can either support popular democratic movements, or support the tinpot dictators which have created "stability" at a huge financial and political cost to their own people (which is most generally funded with US taxpayer dollars).

And for Hillary Clinton to have made the comment that "all people have universal rights, including the right to peaceful assembly" demonstrates that she is one of the most venal, outstanding hypocrites of her generation in US government.

Please note that she had the nerve to make that statement after she had noted and respected peace activist Ray McGovern hauled out of the university building in which she was speaking and beaten up for having had the temerity to stand up during her address, and face the other way, silently.

Bahrain forces fire on protesters

the clash came hours after funeral mourners and worshippers at Friday prayers called for the toppling of the Western-allied monarchy in the tiny island nation that is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, the centerpiece of the Pentagon's efforts to confront Iranian military influence. Some members of Bahrain's Sunni ruling system worry that Shiite powerhouse Iran could use Bahrain's majority Shiites as a further foothold in the region.

The White House has expressed "strong displeasure" about the rising tensions in Bahrain.

Day by day, the crisis in Bahrain has deepened.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If the Bahraini government thought for one second that this tactic was going to work, they have another thing or two coming.

There may be a point where all the military suppression in the world is not going to work, and the Bahraini ruling monarchy may just want to consider the possibilities of "getting out of Dodge" while this is possible with all their body parts in tact.

The US cannot come in militarily on the side of the government; that would be reckless and clumsy in the extreme.

But the US cannot have this situation both ways; it cannot continue to support the dictatorship when it encourages peaceful freedom of assembly for the Bahraini people.

Four dead, 60 missing in Bahrain

At least four protesters have been killed and about 60 gone missing after Bahraini security forces storm a protest camp in capital Manama.

Bahraini police broke up a protest camp in Pearl Square in downtown Manama on Thursday and fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the protesters, a Press TV correspondent quoted an unnamed opposition lawmaker as saying.

Bahraini protesters have renamed the square as Tahrir Square, after a square with a similar name in Egypt, which became the center of pro-democracy protests.

Four people were killed during the clashes, bringing to seven the total number of those killed since the protests began on Monday.

Police launch “brutal” operation in Bahrain

It was the early hours of the morning in Bahrain when the security forces launched a major operation to clear a camp of protesters in the capital, Manama.

Men, women and children ran for their lives. Witnesses say it was a brutal assault. Most people were asleep when the police arrived in force, armed with tear gas and rubber bullets. The opposition say three people have been killed. Dozens are thought to have been injured.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Big mistake. The government is now seen as declaring war on its own people, which makes returning to normal relations almost impossible now.

The fastest way to bring down a dictatorship is to force it to act like one where everyone can see it!

Bahrain government concerned about collapsing

A call has been made by the Bahraini king for a national dialogue with the people.

With Bahrain's military continuing to clash with demonstrators, killing several and wounding hundreds, the king's offer has already been rejected by the main opposition bloc, al-Wefaq.

Al-Wefaq's leaders have said the government must first resign and troops must withdraw from the streets.

Webmaster's Commentary:

When pushed into a corner, all government will say they are willing to listen to the people. but of course, their decades-long failure to listen is why they are in that corner.

U.S. Backs Bahrain Royalty, Varying Playbook on Revolt

The U.S. is stepping up its support for Bahrain's beleaguered ruling family, throwing a lifeline to a key ally and signaling Washington's willingness to vary its approach depending on its strategic interests and the willingness of autocratic leaders to respond to popular protests.

The show of U.S. support for the ruling family follows a lobbying push by Bahrain and its main ally in the region, Saudi Arabia, the officials and diplomats said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Translation; as has consistently been the case, the US only supports grass-roots "democracy" when the outcome of such democracy movements is guaranteed to be to the US government's liking.

And if you don't believe that, remember what happened what Hamas was voted into power in 2006!

The Arsenal Against Democracy: US Arms Fuel Bahraini Crackdown

A tiny nation with no real security threats, one would have likely been puzzled up until this week at the massive military spending of Bahrain, and its stockpiling of US-made weapons. The crackdowns of the past few days make it clear: these arms were meant to target the public, not some foreign enemy.

Over the years the US has sold Bahrain an enormous collection of weapons, including the F5 Freedom Fighter warplanes that are in the skies now, literally fighting freedom. The tanks that roll through the streets of Manama are M60A3 tanks, made in Detroit in the 1990s, with an historical market out front lauding the plant as the Arsenal of Democracy. The arsenal, it seems, turned on democracy at some point.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The people of Bahrain don't "hate us because we are free"; they hate us because nearly every bullet, tank, and gun being used against them is stamped "Made in the USA"!

Arms used in Bahrain crackdown 'made in UK, sold recklessly'

'Victory' chants resonates in Bahrain

Reports say thousands of pro-democracy protesters, chanting “victory, victory,” have forced out police and snipers from a central square in The Bahraini capital, Manama.

Thousands have start marching towards Pearl Square, which has become the symbol of the ongoing revolutionary movement.

Protesters retuned to the epicenter of demonstrations shortly after riot police fired tear gas and shotgun rounds before leaving, Maryam Khawaja with the Bahrain Center for Human Rights told Press TV.

Live footage show that protesters are removing roadblocks and barbed wire barricade from main roads reaching the square.

Khawaja said protesters were in high spirits and chanting slogans such as 'victory, victory.'

'Saudi Arabia sending troops to Bahrain'

Saudi Arabia is sending troops to Bahrain in a move to crack down on pro-democracy protesters who took to the streets in the capital Manama, a political analyst says.

The analyst told PressTV on Tuesday that Riyadh is sending its troops in an attempt to help King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa to crack down on the protesters.

Bahrain protests a worry for US and its fifth fleet

The US will be watching developments in Bahrain anxiously as it is the headquarters of the US navy's fifth fleet, which operates at least one aircraft carrier in the Gulf at all times, along with an amphibious group of ships with marines aboard.

The fleet's presence is aimed at ensuring the free flow of oil through the Gulf, as well as monitoring Iran and deterring piracy.

US navy officials have said there is no sign that crowds intend to direct their hostility toward the roughly 4,200 service members who live and work there.
